Spring Celebration With Jack Hubley And Michael Helfrich

Naturalist Jack Hubley and Michael Helfrich, River Keeper for the Lower Susquehanna River, were the featured speakers at The Chestnut Grove Foundation's Spring Celebration, April 12, 2008, at the Blue Rock Heritage Center.

Hubley presented a wildlife program with some of the wild animals we can find in our own backyards. Helfrich used the nearby river to talk about the challenges to the Susquehanna, demonstrating principles of river ecology.

In addition to the presentations by Hubley and Helfrich, there was a T-shirt raffle and activities for children as well as drinks and baked home-made treats. Information was on hand about other local environmental groups, including the Little Conestoga Watershed Alliance, The Washington Boro Society for Susquehanna River Heritage, and Stewards of the Lower Susquehanna.

The Chestnut Grove Foundation used the Spring Celebration to raise awareness about our local environment and to kick off its newest program, "Seeds of Sustainability," a contest for property owners in the Penn Manor School District that will offer residents prizes of up to $1000. The contest aims to promote stewardship and conservation of natural resources among property owners and will recognize residents who improve their properties by conserving energy, reducing pollution or protecting or conserving natural resources.
