What is CGF?

Chestnut Grove Foundation - A Local Organization

What is the Chestnut Grove Foundation?

In June, 2004, The Chestnut Grove Foundation incorporated as a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to preserving and protecting our local environment and heritage and to promoting non-partisan citizen participation in local government. CGF is registered with the Pennsylvania Bureau of Charitable Organizations.

What is CGF's mission?

The Chestnut Grove Foundation supports research & education programs related to the environment and sponsors public awareness activities. We also support environmental and heritage organizations in Manor Township and surrounding areas.

Why is CGF in Manor Township?

The Chestnut Grove Foundation takes it name from the American Chestnut Tree, groves of which once covered much of the Susquehanna River Hills in Manor Township. CGF was formed in response to citizens' concerns about land use in Manor Township.

How does CGF fund its work?

Part of the requirement for CGF's non-profit status is that our programs must develop sources of financial support from the community and that all contributions must go to support the Foundation's work. In addition to public fund raising, income comes from interest earned on a $100,000 endowment, which the CGF board voted to keep intact as an income source to provide programs benefiting the citizens of Manor Township and surrounding areas.

How does CGF operate?

The Chestnut Grove Foundation has a volunteer Board of Directors that meets on average eight times a year. It has no paid staff, so 100% of donations go directly to provide programs for our community.

What are some of the projects CGF has supported to date?

Since incorporating in 2004, Chestnut Grove Foundation has supported a variety of environmental, heritage and educational programs, working with the Washington Boro Society for Susquehanna River Heritage, Lancaster County Park's Shutt's Environmental Center, and Manor Township Parks & Recreation Summer Program. The Foundation has been a sponsor of the Lancaster County Environmental Envirothon and Environmental Division of Lancaster Newspapers' County Science and Engineering Fair. CGF supported a dredging project in the Conestoga River, an "Environmental Day" at School District of Lancaster 's Fulton Elementary School and recycling and bird identification programs at Manor Middle School. Upcoming programs include interactive environmental programs in the Penn Manor School District and support for teacher internship with the River Keeper of the Lower Susquehanna River.
